ABOUT THE WORKSHOP


Climate change is a critical concern globally. In order to mitigate its catastrophic impacts on the earth’s livelihood, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has recommended the global greenhouse emissions to be declined to net zero by 2050.  As a result, countries are aiming to contribute to the net zero target via developing the processes and technologies to manage, store and remove the greenhouse gases from the environment. Significant contribution to greenhouse gases emission comes from the energy sector and for the net zero targets to be achieved; this sector urgently requires unprecedented actions without compromising energy supply or increasing prices. The energy sector needs evolution of advanced materials and technologies from generation to storage and utilization. Technologies for carbon capture and storage would also play a crucial role.  Wide range of technologies are being developed globally using advanced materials and processes towards fulfilling net zero targets but there are gaps and challenges to use them to their full potential.

This workshop aims to bring national and international experts and researchers together on the same platform to discuss about the materials and technologies being developed globally to achieve the net zero target and the challenges therein. Round table discussions will be held that will help identify gaps in international standardisation and reference materials to support the uptake of the materials and technologies towards this goal. The outcome of the workshop will be published as a VAMAS Insights report on materials, challenges and standardisation requirements for net zero technologies.

Workshop themes
  • Materials for energy generation (solar, nuclear, thermoelectric, wind and hydrogen)
  • Materials for energy storage (batteries, super-capacitors and carbon capture and utilization)
  • Materials for energy efficient technologies (power electronics, low loss electronics, building integrated technologies)
  • Materials for circular economy (recycling, sustainable manufacturing)
    Eminent experts from India and VAMAS member regions will participate in the workshop. VAMAS is currently is a G16 network with members from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, The European Commission, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, UK and the USA. Scientists, engineers, researchers and students from academia and industry are invited to register their expression of interest in the first instance to participate actively in the workshop. Participation at the meeting is by invitation only and registration is essential Those wishing to present will need to submit an abstract of not more than 250 words for review by the scientific organising committee. Expected topics include
    • Identification of areas with lack of standardization and best practice
    • Evaluation of performance and assessment methods to evaluate reliability of materials and devices
    • Identification of technical barriers affecting efficiency
    • Improvements needed for existing technologies
    • Durability of materials at cryogenic temperatures
    • Evaluation of recyclability, biodegradability to support a circular economy

    ABOUT SC48 MEETING

    Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS) is a global inter-governmental organization established in 1982 following a G7 Economic summit to facilitate Innovation and global trade of advanced materials.

    Through international collaborative project, VAMAS provides the technical evidence for harmonization of measurements methods, reference materials, testing and specifications, leading to agreed and widespread adoption of best practices and standards. The work of VAMAS has led to the publication of International standards, the creation of new products and services, and the dissemination of best practices to global organisations. Presently VAMAS secretariat is with National Physical Laboratory, UK.

    Every year VAMAS steering committee (SC) meeting is held in different continents to review and status of ongoing TWA project, discussion on new TWA, Approval of new TWA and development of new policies etc. This year VAMAS SC48 is going to be held in Asia i.e. India. The meeting will be on 11th and 12th, October, 2023 in CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi.

    IGI airport to CSIR National Physical Laboratory, Dr. K.S. Krishnan Marg is by road 12km distance. From IGI Airport Pre paid Taxi’s as well as Bus services are available.  IGI is connected through Airport metro line from New Delhi Railway station.

    Most of the hotel from IGI airport is in the distance of 15-20 km.
