RESUME OF MAHAVIR SINGH PhD (IITD), CEng, Peng, FASI, FMSI, FUSI, FIEI, MIIAV-USA

Mahavir Singh, born in Ghaziabad (UP), India. He received his first degree in mechanical engineering in 1988, from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Surat. In 1991, he obtained an M. Tech. in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, and in 2003, obtained a Ph. D. degree in technical acoustics from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. Currently, he is a Chief Scientist/Scientist-G and Head of the Acoustics & Vibration Metrology of the CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, Advisor to Director, CSIR-NPL, and Professor of AcSIR. He has over 28 years of experience in Acoustics and Vibration activities at CSIR-NPL, New Delhi.

His main research interests are in the field of building acoustics (it is noise transmission in the audio frequencies), application of statistical energy analysis (SEA) to buildings and other structures, modeling of wall sound transmission losses using artificial neural network (ANN), noise & vibration control, calibration & testing of electro-acoustic equipments/acoustical products & devices, maintenance, up-gradation & realization of national primary standards for acoustics and vibration to establish a quality system for traceable calibration measurement service; participated in key comparison of national acoustics and vibration standards at CCUVA/APMP level with NMIs of the world and advisory technical consultancy in architectural acoustics. Provide services to the industry & institution of the Country. Countries visited by him include Germany, Italy, Japan, Thailand, Spain, France (two times), and Singapore (two times).

Dr. Singh has published over 160 research papers in professional journals and conference proceedings; authored a book entitled “Noise Control in Buildings - Fundamental and Applications” (Narosa Publishing House, New Delhi, 2014) and another book entitled ”Recent Developments in Acoustics” (Springer Nature Singapore, 2020); many chapters in few books and organized several national & international conferences and workshops - two mega-events organized: Indo-French Conference on Acoustics (Acoustics 2013 New Delhi) and WESPAC 2018. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of India (ASI), Ultrasonics Society of India (USI), Metrology Society of India (MSI), the Institution of Engineers (IEI), and a Member of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV-USA), has been Guest Editor for several journals and a Member of several acoustical societies. Dr. Singh has also been active in the affairs of acoustics through serving to ASI in various capacities as Treasurer and Managing Editor, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Acoustical Society of India (JASI). General Secretary of Ultrasonics Society of India (USI) (2012-16), Treasurer of Metrology Society of India (MSI) (2010-14), Recently, he is a General Secretary of Acoustical Society of India (ASI), Member of Consultative Committee of Acoustics, Ultrasound, and Vibration (CCAUV-BIPM, France), an International Peer Reviewer within the CIPM MRA in the fields of Acoustics and Vibration Metrology based on the Joint Committee of the Regional Metrology Organizations and the BIPM (JCRB), and Working Group Member of TC 29/WG 5 & WG 10 of IEC.

Dr. Singh has been awarded the Sir CV Raman Award for the best-contributed paper in JASI for 2004, 2013, and 2014; the best ICA cartoons award on acoustics; the successively three times ICA-ASA Young Scientist Award from the International Commission for Acoustics (ICA) for excellent contribution to acoustics in the field of room and building acoustics for 2001, 2004 and for 2007, respectively, IEI Young Scientist Award (2009), Distinguished Service Award by ASI for 2011-13, Best Delhi Chapter Award by ASI for 2017, Lifetime Achievement Award for Acoustics & Vibration Metrology by VIRA (2017), First recipient of Indo-Japan Friendship Award on Acoustics in Simulation (2018), Chairperson of Selection Committee for Indo-Japan Collaboration Award on Acoustics in Simulation for next 10 years (2019-2029). Also, he has been a reviewer of several Ph. D. theses throughout India and also M. Tech. Dissertations and also a reviewer of Applied Acoustics-Journal, International Journal of Acoustics and Vibration, Journal of Building Acoustics, International Journal of Vehicle Noise and Vibration, Acoustical Society of America. etc.
